Following interest from some members the club has decided to develop a Register in the club for the Renault 5Turbo/Turbo2. The Registrar is Paul Williams 01685879531
My name is Paul Williams and I am the new Registrar for the Renault 5 Turbo 1 & 2. Firstly, I would like to thank the Renault Classic Car Club for welcoming the Turbo 1 and 2 into the club. I have been the proud owner of my Turbo 2 for the past eighteen months and although I don’t pretend to be an expert, I am an avid enthusiast and as such have gained a lot of knowledge in a short time. I will be more than happy to help anyone with any queries they have about the Car. I have been a Classic Car Enthusiast from the age of 10 and re-built my first car (a 1964 VW Beetle) at the age of 15. From then on up until 1999 I restored numerous ‘basket-case’ projects spending all my free time welding, engine building, panel beating and spraying. Being a Rally Fan and ever since owning a Renault 5 Gordini in 1986, the 5 Turbo was one of cars that I REALLY wanted to own. Fortunately, whilst surfing the net one day I came across one for sale at John Price Rallying. I fell in love with the car straight away and hope to keep it for many years to come. ABOUT THE RENAULT 5 TURBO The Renault 5 Turbo was built for Motorsport to follow in the footsteps of the rear engined Renault 8 Gordini and the A110 Berlinetta. The concept of the Renault 5 rear-engined turbo was dreamed up by Jean Terramorsi who knew that to be able to compete with the likes of Audi, Peugeot and Fiat in World Rally Championships he had to make the car light and have a mid/rear engine layout. Unfortunately, he died without seeing his vision come to life. Originally only 400 cars were going to be produced (this being the minimum number for homologation) as Renault did not think that the car would be so popular - little did they know! A total of 1,820 Turbo 1’s and 3,167 Turbo 2’s were built at Dieppe alongside the A310. The car had 33 top 10 placings in the WRC Championship between 1981-1986 with a 1st on the Monte Carlo and The Tour De Course. The car also produced 16 Championship Winners in the E.U between 1981 and 1986. In 1984 and 1985 John Price won the ‘Motoring News Tarmac Championship’ in the 5 Turbo. The 5 Turbo is an awesome little car. I am always left amazed by it’s mid range acceleration and come away with a proud smile on my face following a drive in the countryside. I could go on and on about this little car but I will leave you with a quote from Peter Meaneys book - ‘The Forgotten French Supercar’ – "Long live the 5 Turbo, a call which is echoed by all that have been lucky enough to have driven one , or even better owned one".
