This account of
R8 ownership was received from John Waterhouse in Australia and demonstrates how
practical an R8 can be

We have a 1964 R1130 that we have owned
since 1973 (only one previous owner) and which has now travelled about 300,000
km. It was in daily use until I bought a Xantia 2 years ago, by which time
it was getting a bit slow for modern traffic in some circumstances. It is
original except that I can't get 956 sleeves and fitted a later all synchro
gearbox about 20 years back when a tooth came off second gear. It's so
orginal that the hub nuts still have factory paint on the split pins.We used to
drive 1000 km per day in the R8, overnight 450 miles Adelaide to Melbourne and
such things.
I think you would agree John has put his car to good
use and it still looks in great shape.
