This Page is to identify some the areas of the body which can
rust to a serious and unsafe condition and to assist prospective owners with the
areas to examine carefully before purchase. The car in the photographs was
bought to break for spares and although at first glance seemed not too bad could not have been safely repaired. It
is interesting that we purchased this car from a restoration company who had
been asked to undertake a restoration for a customer.
It can be seen from these pictures that this car had severe rust all chassis
rails were severely corroded and both front and rear wings were beyond repair
the inner rear wheel flitches were holed and most of the floor pan was weak or
in holes. Outer and inner door skins were severely damaged and although the rear
doors are repairable the fronts would require much time and skill.
If contemplating a restoration project it is often worth asking another club
member who is familiar with the car to have a look with you and help establish a
realistic assessment of repairability and costs.
It is normally not worth attempting to restore a car with extreme body corrosion
as there are always reasonable cars to be found .Robin our registrar is usually
aware of at least 5 cars for sale for restoration or in good order.
